jbj 28g biocube
So my sister just bought a bio cube and has had it setup for about 2 weeks now. She purchased a 100w heater and a digital thermometer. I been monitoring the thermometer and its been steady around 84 degrees. i dont understand why, i even have her thermometer turned all the way down so i doubt that is the problem. now it does seem to be pretty warm where the PC's are but i dont understand why if the fans are constantly running while the lights are one. Anything we can do to bring the temp down?

Is the heater stuck on? Assuming the heater has a temp setting, what is it set to? Is it only hot when the lights are on?

That about how hot my 28G JBJ nano runs as well. I think its just the nature of the beast. I never saw any ill effects of having the high temps. Mine was around 83-84 lights on, 78-79 lights off. My corals and fish thrived.

I would first ask you what 28 G JBJ Bio Cube did she purchase?
IE: LED - Intermediate or Pro, HQI or CF Each lighting system produces a certian amount of heat and will cause the tank to run a certian level of degrees above the constant room ambiant temperature. LED lighting produces the least amount of heat where CF Compact Fluorescent and HQI will produce more heat. I have always used the CF models as I am more into LPS corals for these small tanks. And since I am in Central Texas where we have 9 months of summer, it has always been more benefical for my circumstance to uyilize a chiller on my JBJ tanks and allow my house to reach temps of 80+ degrees during the heat of the day. Best suggestion short of a chiller is to purchase clip on fans to run over the refugium area open on the back. This may get you the degree or two you need. Will also evaporate water faster and you will probably need to add about a galon of RODI per week. In addition the pumps and power heads will increase the temp of your tank as well. I have found the CF models run about 6 -7 degrees above ambiant room temp, and the LED intermediate runs around 3 -4 degrees above ambiamt temp. Not sure about the HQI but I would estimate it to be in the 5- 7 degree range. Therefore if your ambiant room temp stays at 75 degrees constantly your tank depending on model should run 3 - 7 degrees warmer or 78 - 82 degrees which is in the safe zone for any model or set up. However tank temps above 82 is begining to get a little warm and fish will start to stress, and at 84 fish are stressing and become over active, as well as corals begining to degrade. Anything over 84 degrees is a slow burner, corals will surely wither away and fish will begin to die off. |

Did you properly calibrate your heater? That may be the issue. Even when I did, mine stilll seems to be a few degrees out of whack. If this is an issue, a controller would resolve this.
Otherwise, I'd say it's your lighting. Power compacts generate a lot of heat. You could try and led upgrade kit if your so concerned.
