cyano bacteria

Usually a sign of too much nutrients, nitrates and phosphates.
Also poor oxygen levels.

Try siphoning out that area and do a water change ( if that is what it is )

Do you use RODI water since cyano loves tap water.
Granular ferric oxide can help aswell.

I had not considered cyano.
The thing is about 1/3 inch thick.

Looks like the rest of your tank is pretty clean. Try to get a little bit more flow in that area.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like I will be reading up on solutions.

Any suggestions on a RODI unit that does not require hard plumbing?
As for the GFO, I happen to have a reactor and GFO from BRS that will be delivered tomorrow.

The tank is just a little 29 gallon that has been up and running for almost exactly one year.

You can set up any of them with a faucet hock up. They don't have to be permanently connected.

How long has the red mass been there? Can it be siphoned out? Or is it solid?
