Cooking LR Question
Do I need to change out the water in a bucket I am cooking some LR in to re-seed it or is it ok to leave the stinky water in? It is in a bucket with a pump and heater. It will be put into a tank in about 2 weeks.

Change it, FYI though if it still stinks in 2 weeks I wouldn't put it in your DT if it's already established.

You want all the mulm off the rocks so swish them around in the old water and transfer them to the new. If you can smell the rocks and it smells like rotten eggs then there is still die off and the rocks are not cured yet. If the rocks smell and they will but have a clean smell like being at the beach then things are improving.
You still want to test though if you can because that is the only way to know if the cycle is done without adding some livestock that may have issues. I would change by this weekend, change again in say 5 days, and again in 5 more. I would then test to see if you have ammonia or nitrates. If you look at the bottom of the bucket and there is a large amount left then you know that the rocks still need to be cooked. I once cooked 50 to 75 pounds in a 20H for 6 months. The first 2 or 3 I would get about one inch of mulm on the bottom, by month 4 maybe a quarter and by the end a light dusting. |
