Please let this be a lesson to everyone...

I bought a beautiful flame angel from a LFS and I didnt have my QT set up so I added it to my DT(44 FOWLR) directly and it was eating and everything but unfortunately after two weeks it was dead (with no spots or anything) and then fish I had healthy for over two years started dying and not I am with only 4 fish in QT out of many more that passed away. Please understand that QTing is the best thing to do to new additions. I learned my lesson before but Ignorance is not a option in this hobby. I am about to loose a cromis that I had for about a year. the jaw has deteriorated away. I know that my tank needs to be left fallow for 8 weeks now and QT is about to be in hypo tomorrow. I just wanted to spread the word that impulse buys cause damage to your tank and hobby. Please listen to the people that are giving you advice and with their knowledge and experiences we can learn. I have had fish for years die due to my stupidity, so please dont make the same mistake. Thanks....RIP Starry blenny, Heniochus butterfly, black clown goby, brown goby, royal gramma, and flame angel.

I'm really sorry to hear about the loss and all the trouble it's now causing you. It's stories like this and the constant warnings I keep reading all over that have me taking QT serious now. I didn't do it with my FW DT, but now that I'm switching over it seems more important than ever.

I just want people to realize that in this hobby a fish isnt just a fish, but it is a pet, a real life that is in our hands to keep alive and happy, I dont mean to be depressing or anything and im sure many people on this forum have lost fish that they have had for many years. the message is that just care for this hobby as a serious thing, not just a hobby but the fact that living organisms are depending on you. I know this is kinda deep but its the truth. I feel terrible that I lost fish that have been with me fore such a long time just over stupidity. I am trying to let others know about the consequences about not taking this hobby seriously.

Well my question is, do you have any idea what is killing the fish? I'm assuming your water parameters are all OK? Going fallow in the DT for 8 weeks is OK for ich, but it doesn't sound like that's what you have here. Maybe 8 weeks won't even be effective... or maybe it's way more than you need. You wrote in your 1st post, "I am about to loose a cromis that I had for about a year. the jaw has deteriorated away." That sounds bad and not like anything I've heard of before. Good luck.

+1 on that. I know ich can stay in the gills and not be visually present. But your fish getting scurvy is different.

wow that really sucks. Sorry to hear that. I've always wondered what would be the minimum equipment setup one would need as far as a qt tank goes?

It happens to experienced aquarists and newbies alike. I added a fish to my DT from a local reefer and ended up with ich in my tank. I learned my lesson the hard way... nothing goes into my tank without going through QT first.

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss. It's scarry how fast things can go bad.

I agree with Ron in that you really need to try and figure out what's going on. Whatever it is, it doesn't sound good.

Outside of the chromis that has a deteriorated jaw did any of the other fish show any signs?

That deteriorating jaw sounds bacterial rather than parasitic. Go consult in the fish disease forum and maybe someone can suggest a course of action.

Sorry for your loss. Quarantining is one of those things we all know we should do, but easily become complacent and lax with when we don't see disease.

Ditto the suggestions on getting a definitive diagnosis. I'd hate for you to have more fish die when you start up because the causative agent wasn't eradicated.
