Island Style tank questions
As part of my home renos I'm planning a large aquarium with basement dump. I'm considering either a 6' peninsula or a 48"x48" or 60"x60" island aquarium with a centered overflow among live rock. I like the idea of 4 viewable sides but are there special considerations?
Anyone have experience or pics to share? |

in the large tank section chingchai is posting his group tank as they build, it is an island tank with pipes covered in rock for overflow/return... it looks great!

That's an amazing setup.
I'm looking for a room divider setup that has overflows centered in the aquarium so that it's viewable on all 4 sides without anything on the outside glass (except maybe some Vortechs). In the dead center would be the overflow box(s) with rock aqua scraped to hide them. Picture a top down view with a large X of rock in the tank. This would allow 4 different views of one tank. |

I do love having a tank that's viewable from 4 sides. The starphire glass is very clear, but softer than regular glass. Having a "clean" set-up (no wires showing) is a challenge. For flow I have a Tarpon return pump (basement sump) and 2 sets of Ocean Motions 4-ways - one set surrounding each overflow. In order for the OM to work properly they need to be positioned down, along the bottom of the tank, to get the detris suspended in a circular pattern, and up to the overflows. I probably have too much LR that's in the way of the OM's. Also, in order to have the best flow, it's at the expense of the sandbed (swirling, and bare spots) so I'm seriously considering trying BB. If i get a chance I'll post some newer pic's. The sofa that was blocking a good portion of the tank is finally gone and i think the new set-up does better justice to viewing, walking around the tank.
Let me know if you need anymore help.....Lisa |
