my smelly tank

ok, the shrimp i put in my 12 gal dx is turning the water pretty funky!! i have this new tank veside the bed so i can enjoy it at night. now my wifes been pretty patient with me on cost and my obsession but i think i'm starting to push my luck. she asked me yesterday what the smell was and i played dumb. today its a little worse if i open the lid. the shrimps still in there also. been in for 3 days. i have some carbon and rock in the back. i used all dry goods as well. havent checked any readings cause i dont have any test supplies yet. i just figured i'd let it cycle for a few weeks or so then test it. but i do have some pillow stuffing. i want to use this and at least try and clen the water up some. do i use it straight or is a basket or bag nessary? i have some old jogging pants with nylon liner i can use. or a laundry bag from dollor tree i can cut. and shouald i remove the shrimp?

I used this method a long time ago... If I'm not wrong you only need the shrimp or shrimps in there for a couple of days maybe a week until you see a spike on ammonia. Its going to smell like hell but thats just ammonia taking over the tank. Go and get a test kit because sooner than later you are going to need it. The API is like $14-16 online and like $20 at LFS.

take the shrimp out and just add a pinch of flake, it will soon mature, it just takes time, eventually the ammonia will be dealt with by newly matured biological filtration created due to the cycle.

Also read the stickies on the cycle, what to do, what to have and what to expect. That way most of your questions will be ask instead of asking dumb questions that people will give you ..... for not doing your research. But other than that there is a lot of people willing to help.
