foot sock for fluval in a hang on filter?

What do you think? Would it work? I got a container of fluval, and it only came with one sock, but I wanted to ad some to my other tank. Would a regular foot suck work if I soaked it in some RO or boiled it? I am literally broke, and can not afored to go to the LFS and by a extra filter sock. I also have a brand new plastic coffee filter laying around. But I don't know what the microns are for on it. I've scene people use plastic coffee filters for GFO, but I have the fine brown fluval, and I'm worried it will leak into the tank if I use the coffee filter. any other ideas for common house hold Items i could use as a filter sock?
