Chemi clean disaster
I used chemi clean to clear up a cyano out break. Now when i get up if lost 3 fish cant find my sixline wrasse and the red and green slime is still there. What can i do to fix it i dont want to lose all the fish. I checked my params and all was fine except for nitrate it was at 5ppm. I double and triple checked them.

I would double check the cautions and warnings on the back of the bottle - I made a habit of calling manufactuers with my stock list to make sure they have not recieved reports of their stuff killing certain fish.. I would call them and find out

That sucks. I just used two doses of Red Slime Remover and all cyano is gone. I didn't lose a fish or any coral. If that stuff is similar to what I used I hope you put an airstone or two in the aquarium as the treatment rapidly uses up oxygen in the water.

ChemiClean is one of the oldest and safest products around. If you are having high nitrate problems after using then it is from the excess of cyano you left in the tank prior to treating. aS it DIES it will leech out trates. Important to siphon out as much as possible prior to treatment to avoid this spike as well as ammonia spike which may be the problem if fish have died, cause 5 ppm nitrate is not enough to harm most corals in the short run much less fish. Did you OD the tank w/ chemiclean? A little more is never good. How much did you use and how many gallons did you treat ? Chemiclean will deplete oxygen levels in water especuially difficult for fish, so going beyond the reccommended dosage will harm your fish, just as overdosing amnything you put into your tank.
Sorry for your loss but I would go over the calculations and measurements you provid to see if this was the case or if something else transpired. |

Nitrate at 5 wouldn't kill your fish. ChemiClean is easy to use, and I have used it multiple times. It works. Issues arise when people don't follow the instructions.
Several large water changes are the best thing you can do for your tank right now. The only thing negative I can say about Chemiclean is that they understate the amount of time it takes your skimmer to stop overfoaming after treatment. Takes about a week to get back to normal operation, IME. |
