Need advice, new to Big Pumps.
I just bought a reeflo hammerhead/barracuda hybird 6kgph. I have questions about splitting the outflow, and I though reefers would know.
I am buying a bead filter to handle the bio load for my tank, and it says it only wants 1kgph. Should I Tee it off the pump so the as the water leaves the pump it travels up the Tee and into the tank for circulation, and then put a gate valve on the circulation side, and use that to create the back pressure to force a smaller amount of water out the side of the tee. Or can I get more stable results be basically bottle necking the tee to say go from 1.5" down to .75" and then back to 1.5". My thought here is that only x many GPH can go through .75". This would in my mind give me a stable flow rate and force the rest into the circulation. http://flexpvc.com/WaterFlowBasedOnPipeSize.shtml Using this chart I am thinking the pump I got would fall into the medium presure range. |

Many of the bead filters create a lot of head pressure, figure out how much head pressure the bead filter creates and look at what the pump pushes at that pressure. It might be better to get a larger bead filter.... 1k gph seems like a small filter. I have advantage bead filters on my koi pond, if I recall they create 6-8 ft of head pressure while other companies create 10-15 ft of back pressure........
The three questions i have is. - How big is your tank.... What bead filter and how much back pressure does it create

Tank is 500G fresh water tank, Please don't kick me out ;-).
I have not choosen a bead filter yet but was looking at teh Ultima 2 1000. This is what that filter says. "Optimal flow 1,000 gph at 10' of head. Direct drive self priming pumps recommended." So even if I switch the hybird pump to the barracuda at 10' head we are still talking 3800gph. I was hoping to find a solution as going up insize on the bead filter is double the cost of the filter. Going from 500.00 to 1000.00 it looks like. |
