Marine Reefing & The K.I.S.S. Method

Can they go hand in hand? Anyone brake this hobby down to it's basics and still have a beautiful tank? I would like to hear about it and hopefully see pic's!
And another thing while I am on my first LI, why does a plastic tank/sump that looks like it may have 80 buck in material & 3 hr's labor cost $400+?

Why does a plastic Skimmer that may look like an Alien urine bottle cost 200 & up?
Every hobby has it's low end & high end but doesn't some of this seem a little ridiculous?

Well,

As far as the K.I.S.S. method goes, I believe it is the Person more so than the equipment.A Reefer that knows not a whole lot can have the most technical setup money can buy, but it my not thrive due to inexperience on his or her part.On the other hand, a Reefer that has a lot of knowledge that really knows what he is doing, can make the most simple System thrive.Experience will get you farther than buying fancy products will.
