Where to place powerheads to max water flow?
Hi forum.
I currently have a 90g Marine tank + 35g sump with 2 tunze powerheads on each side of the tank. I have seen some pictures of people's tanks where they actually place the powerheads attached on the back of the tank instead of the sides. Would that increase the water flow? Thanks |

I think its more about where the flow is going not about having MORE flow. I haven't done it but I would guess that it would make less dead spots on the sides of the tank.

I place mine on the sides aimed right at each so the current bounces off and displaces it everywhere.

On the sides would be better. I would put them like this to create a cross pattern:
A little closer to each other so they sort of cross as well as bounce off flow. =======>..................... .......................<=======

I also have a 90g setup and besides my 2 sump return lines I have 4 Koralia evo's. 2 of them are 1400 evo's which I have placed on the sides of my tank pointing towards the center, right at each other. (one higher then the other) And then I have 2 750 evo's that are on the back glass at the sides pointing downwards to the front to give me more flow around the sides of my reef. This has been working for me for just over a year now with no problems and plenty of flow all around my reef. I also have all 4 connected to an Ocean Pulse Wave Maker, with 2 of them coming on together at the same time in 45 sec. intervals.
I do take care though as to not have any of them pointing right at some of my corals that are placed towards the sides of my reef so I'm not blasting them. You will have to watch and play around with your power-head positions over time for what would be the best placement in your tank. As I said, just be careful not to flow blast any corals that you may have that do not like a lot of flow. They will be quick to tell you if they are unhappy.

I like to move mine around every now and then so my corals get flow from different directions. If you do this enough, eventually you will figure out where the "sweet spot" is for all your powerheads for all your corals liking.

I have a 75gl and just starting a 210gl, both have a pair of Tunze 6105's I asked Roger form Tunze (Check out the Tunze forum here) http://web1.reefcentral.com/forums/f...sprune=30&f=92 He advised me for the 75gl tank 48" to put them on the back wall in the corner and point them towards the center then alternate the flows. Are yours controllable? For the 210 he also advised me to place them in the same place but aim them about 4 to 5 feet down and again alternate the flows.
