changing tanks

The tank that I have is scratched up on the inside and I really have decided on a different shape. I was wondering if I were to get another tank would I be able to just take what is in the old tank, live rock, live rock and such and put it in the new tank or would I have to restart the whole process

As long as your current set up is well established and the volume of the new tank is similar, you should not have to restart the process.

How old is the tank? If it's fairly new it shouldn't be a problem. If it's been set up a while the sand bed will likely be full of detritus and you'll end up with a mini cycle if you just scoop it out and pop it into the new tank. When I switched tanks I used new aragonite and only tranferred a couple of cups of my live sand to the new tank to seed the aragonite.

Several friends have done this, and switched everything over except the sand. They added new live sand and a cup or so of their old sand to seed it and were successful with it.

Yeah as long as you put new sand it shouldnt be a problem. There is a margin for losing corals but it shouldnt be that big of a margin if the parameters are close, especially salinity and alkalinity.

I did it recently with a 30 going down to a 14g Biocube. I used some of the same sand, and didnt lose anything. I did use mostly the same water too

Just make sure you do a drip acclimation. It should be fine
