Sponge pre-filter on return pump?
Are folks using them, are they necessary? I have a small one on the Sicce pump that came with my Midi....if I forget to rinse it periodically it severely reduces my return's output. I'm considering ditching it. Just wanted to get some community thougths before doing so. Thanks,
Chuck

They are farms for crap and will cause problems like you mentioned and also feed Nitrates, etc. However, if you have any fish in the sump or tank that can get pulled into the pump, they are needed.
If this is not a worry, I'd pull them out.

Really the only purpose they serve is to keep the pump "cleaner", not that they keep anything cleaner but the idea is if it is caught by the prefilter then it will prolong the life of the pump. They do cut back on return flow and when they are dirty severely cut back on flow. I have a mag 12 on my 125g and don't have any filter on it anymore. I had one for about 2 wks but didn't see difference in the tank with or without it
