Question Aquascaping and Mortar

So I'm following the amazing Tips and Tricks on Creating Amazing Aquascapes and there was mention using Marco Rocks Mortar, which instantly piqued my interest.

My Pukani rocks are shaped such that they don't lend themselves to "stacking" that would look like one piece. But Marco Rocks Bonding/Mortar seems to be the answer in that I could fill and sculpt the joints between rocks to make it appear as one.

My question: would any commercially available mortar, such as that from "big-box" stores (e.g. Home Depot, Lowe's) suffice? And what about cement/mortar color additives?

I would think most mortars should be safe, but since I'm not 100% sure nor what brands/ingredients to avoid, I don't want to risk potential hazardous materials from killing my tank.
