2 Clownfish

Can you have two species of clownfish living in the same tank?

Likely not suggested, could add more than two but two might group together against one. Perhaps it's been done but taking a chance for serious conflicts. Was a success mentioned in a larger tank but if either entered the others territory conflict always present.

if its a larger than 200gal tank u might get away with it. i have a 300gal tank with a pair of regular tank raised clowns and a pair of black clowns. never had any problems with them.
key is to introduce them all at same time.

I agree with bnumair, but you could ask snorvich in the "please check your intended fish purchases here first" thread.

He will be more than happy to give you expert advice.

I will have to agree with the statement that it is not advisable. However I will convey my story. I have a 90 gallon with 20 in the sump.

My First fish was a Beautiful Snowflake clown. It was with me for 9 months when one day it was gone! I looked everywhere for it. After a few days I figured the CUC had a tasty meal and decided to get myself a slightly more aggressive fish. So I opted for a Yellow striped Maroon.

While acclimating it I was fiddling around in the sump. Something caught my eye in the area that is covered by the overflow in the tank. There was no sand in this area and I could see up through it. Sure enough, my Snowflake had jumped into the overflow! Great, now I have 2 incompatible fish.

Since it was late Sunday evening, the fish store was closed and wouldn't be open again until Tuesday and I don't have another tank, I figured I'd let the Maroon go in my DT and catch it later to return. Well that later turned out to be never. The Snowflake and the Maroon got along famously! They chummed around together and never fought even though they were roughly the same size. I watched carefully for a few months for any signs of aggression and never saw any.

Later that silly clown jumped into the overflow again. I fished him out and covered it. That worked until November. Sadly, he attempted another overflow dive and ended up on top of the cover. He didn't manage to get himself off. I still miss that guy. He was so full of personality.

Anyway, I was successful in having two different kinds of clowns in my tank even though its a small one. I know I was lucky and will not be trying it again. My Maroon is almost black it is so dark, so I have decided to add another, much smaller, Yellow striped Maroon that is a brighter orange. Since they are the same species they should be able to cohabitate in my tank. At least thats what I'm hoping for!
