Remora C Protien skimmer

Does anyone have any useful tips on how to quiet this skimmer down?? It works great - it's just LOUD. The company sent me a "muffler" for it but that does nothing. It's driving me insane!

I have had mine for about 7 years now, and it makes noise, but not too bad...
Can you describe where the noise is coming from? The pump, venturi or just all over?

Sounds like its coming from where the water gets injected, would that be the venturi your talking about? I dont have a manual with it. Bought it from someone on this site.

Yes that's where the venturi is located. I think it's something you may have to live with or replace the pump or wear ear plugs.

I downloaded the user manual - it talks about cleaning the injector pump every 3-6 months - I've had it for several months now and haven't cleaned it and who knows the last time the prior owner cleaned it. I'm going to try that tomorrow. The manual also mentions that it will stop skimming for a bit during feeding or if there are oils on your hands when your messing around in the tank - my skims ALL the time, is that normal as well?

Yes, that's normal. What they mean is it could stop skimming under those condition, because people have thought there might be an issue when that happens.

If you are referring to a "woooooshing" sound, you will either get used to it, or replace the skimmer. The wooshing sound isnt going away. lol

I had one years ago, the wife said it was either me or the Remora, but one (if not both) of us was going...I'm still here, but the Remora left us. The Tunze 9002 is a very quiet skimmer if you are looking for a replacement. I don't think it skims quite as well as that old Remora, but it's a solid quiet skimmer.

Ok, one last question for the night - can I just shut it down for the night? Then turn it back on in the am?

Yes, it is okay, obviously that is not ideal but a 6-8 hour stoppage will not hurt anything other than it will pull out less protein from the tank. If you go more than about 8 hours it does start to affect production when the skimmer is turned back on.

Cut a square piece of acrylic or plastic of some sort and place it over the venturi. When you look down into the skimmer you see three compartments. You should be compleatly covering and sealing the left side. The plastic will just sit on the little screw. that should cut the noise in half. Sorry I dont have pictures right now.

I actually cut a piece of packing foam that came with my LED lights to fit over the injection chamber. It is cut to fit over the entire injection chamber. Quited to the skimmer down to almost silent.

You can also split airline tubing lengthwise and slip it over the edges of your acrylic or plastic piece (plastic lids from margarine or sour cream tubs work well) to make a sort of gasket and vibration damper. Over that, lay some folded up damp paper towels. Should quiet it down.

My current one is a newer model that comes with a foam "muffler" fit tightly around the injection area. I consider it quiet - just a gentle whoosh of white noise - actually kind of pleasant.
