Why is my sand bed turning orange/brown?

I have a two inch sandbed in my 75g dt. Recently it has been turning brown. Until it is disturbed.
Any help?

How old is the tank? If it's a newly setup tank, or if you recently changed the intensity of your lighting, it might also be a diatom bloom. Could you post some pics of it?

Recently added some led strips but this has happened before during the cycle.

I did use tap water in the beginning but That was at least 75% worth of water changes ago.

It looks like diatoms to me, but I'm still fairly newb. If it is diatoms it should go away in a week or to. Nothing to worry about really.

As far as identifying the cause of the bloom, well, it could be anything really. Did you get a diatom bloom after you added the strips? I had a small bloom when my tank first cycled, but also got another fairly large one a few days after adding my LED's.

I have diatoms still from time to time if I change anything in the tank. Even if I change light bulbs or move around rock or sand I may get a small diatom bloom. Just keep up with your tank maintance and they will go away.

Diatoms, are you cycling your tank? They usually come close to the end and will come and go whenever silicates are availible. They don't harm anything just look blah

No. But lighting has changed a bit. Added a strip of 10,000k LEDs

See if your LFS have conchs. They do wonders in my tank.

Conchs will turn and burn in the sand... They will make sure it looks nice. Dont worry if you do not see them for a bit.. they are hiding... (they are modest)

If you are trying to keep the top layer of the sand live then you should try something other than a sand sifter.

This plus 1.

Anyhow, diatoms come and go, or used to in my tank for about 2 years. If they got to be to annoying, I used the best sand sifter. Me with a dowel! Just stir up the sand bed, stay on the surface if it's a DSB. The tank is in it's 3rd year now, haven't seen any diatoms for a year, and the sandbed is healthy and full of critters.

Yes these critters will reproduce and keep it clear.

I am building a new 180. I am on the downward leg of cycling.

The sandbed is 4-5 inches. My 120 had a 2-4 and I had critters all in it and it looked nice.

I even bought two conchs because I wanted it cleaner... hahaha
