downsizing instead of quitting...but which skimmer?
Hi All,
I've all but thrown in the towel after losing 99% of my reef from Sandy in the fall. My tank has been pretty much a big tub of water with 2 clams in it. After thinkin of serious quitting after 25 yrs in the hobby I decided to downsize (from 100 gal) to a 45 cube. I've always used ETS skimmers in the past but what I have is way overkill for this tank (esp since I've moved the tank from the basement to the living room). I am not super savvy with all the different flavors of skimmers out there so. Any recommendations? It would need to sit in the sump under the tank (26" tall stand x 24 x 24). Also, planning on keeping clams and SPS etc. Thanks! |

Tunze Nano DOC 9002 or maybe the Bubble Magus NAC3.5.

If you have the jack IMHO then you can not beat a Bubble King Mini 160
Specs: •Tank Size: 50-135 Gallons •Footprint: 10" x 11.5" •Total Height: 22" •Body/Cup Diameter: 6" •Cup Height: 7.5" •Neck Diameter: 3.5" •Bubble Plate Diameter: 5" •Pump Model: Red Dragon RD 600 •Air Draw LPH: 600 •Water Draw LPH: 1000 •Wattage: 18W Vertex is also a great skimmer and a little less expensive. My 3rd choice would be the Reef Octopus NWB110 All are good and will do a good job on your size tank. It all depends if you want to spend a 1000.00 or 200.00 Mark |

I can personally vouch for these two.
The Tunze is great skimmer when it works, however, mine seemed to require adjusting on a weekly basis. I just upgraded to the Bubble Magus from the Tunze, for the price it does an outstanding job and far outperforms the Tunze. I just poured out a majorly stinky cup of dark green waste tonight after a week in the tank. |

We use 2 tunze in 2 different tanks but both are 30g+/-. I think it would be a little less performance than what you'd want. I also have a bubble magus curve 7 and a curve 9 running. The curve 5 would be on the larger side for your needs but still be fully capable without being overly large. They are about $200
