Quick QT Filtration Question
I originally purchased a cheap-O PETCO HOB Power filter for 5-15Gal for use on my 10G QT ..... Well, what a coincidence, here's the link! :
http://www.petco.com/product/120137/...FishFC_Filters I also have a larger Aqueon HOB I puchased for temporary use on my DT which is rated for 75 Gal... I am setting up my QT for a new arrival (a single small long nose angel) and deciding between the PETCO-Cheepo or the LARGE Aqueon. The Aqueon would obviously provide superior filtration and higher turnover, but it may be overkill for a 10Gal tank. Also... I have Fluval 406 loaded with Fluval Biomedia donuts that are all juiced up and ready to go from the DT. Should I just dump these into the water chamber of the HOB Power filters (whichever i choose?) and leave out the carbon filter pads?? Thanks for all assistance in advance.

Wouldn't the siphon tube of the larger HOB be too long for this little 10gal? If it can fit, I don't see why not. You will get more water movement with the larger HOB.
Yes, you would put those rings in the HOB Filter and leave out the carbon.

You have to cycle the medium for QT for sure. |

So a couple of thoughts... a 10g QT may be WORSE for your fish than no QT... I run a 20g and its borderline. Also the small size will mean you will need to have to topoff 2x a day, I have to topoff every night on my 20g. I picked mine up at LFS during the $1 per gal sales that all stores seem to have.
I just run a powerhead with a sponge filter. Trick I learned, mark the waterline at the proper SG, then when you need to topoff you just add FW till you are back at the line... back to correct SG (no measuring). NOTE you can ignore all the plumbing.. I am lazy and like to be able to pump water from my DT or Mix tank into the QT, also pump water out of QT to drain (small pump in the Qt tank by the heater - set at water level for a 30% change). When not in use

Nothing is worse than no QT.
No QT means a source of cheap stuffs on Craigslist. A ten gal is not ideal but could do for some type of fish; the type that are small, do not cruise around much even in the ocean, and feeding eagerly at he LFS even when in confinement. |

I was only trying to point out that a 10g QT is pretty small and Ammonia or SG change can happen so fast with a tank that small and could be the cause of mortality...
A long time ago I posted the following: 3 kinds of people in our hobby 1. Those who QT 2. Those who wish they did 3. Those who dont and continue to battle ich and other issues and wonder why. I am a BIG fan of QT. 4 weeks min. I personally dont proactively medicate but observe and med if necessary. I often do hypo.

Ammonia will surge even in a 100 gal if you had not cycled the medium for QT properly. The only exception is if an antibiotic has to be used. Ammonia or not has ZERO to do with the size of the QT; Ammonia has more to do with the process of cycling, and infrequently the size of the filter chamber or amount of medium. |

The size of the QT tank needed is mostly behaviorial, water chemical quality is dependent on filtration not the size of the tank.
There are small considerations such as temp stability perhaps. |

UMMMMMMM folks???
I was asking about the size of the power filter, not debating over the size of the QT? Can anyone answer my question ? I ran the Petco-Cheepo power head for a few small clownfish, but now that my Aqueon 75 is free i would prefer to use that if it's not overkill. PS...for what its worth ... Yes there willl be One small-medium fish, already spent 2 weeks of QT at a reliabe and knowledgeable LFS. Voracious appetitite (persoanlly witnessed in the LFS)... Yes he will spend 4 weeks in my own QT... Bio media (donuts) is mature (2 months in a Fuval 406 circulating a very stable 75Gal tank). I may even thow in the bio sponge if theres room (again depends on my power filter question)...... I am anal about checking the tanks 100 times a day, so no problem catching spikes of anything.

I'm a complete newb so take it for what it's worth. It's probably overkill but I don't see how it could be a bad thing. Lot's more room for media and surface area for bacteria in the bigger filter.
My Aquaclear has a lever that you can adjust flow. If you think you're getting too much flow (not sure that's possible even with that much oversized filter) you can adjust it down very easily.
