HELP-Lighting Decision

I have an opportunity to pick up either a 6 bulb or 8 bulb ATI T5 fixture for a great price. I'm planning a standard 48" 120 gallon tank (48X24X24). The fixtures are 48" (47" actually). Is this too long for a standard 48" tank? I will have a canopy over the tank. Will I have an issue with light bleed or too much heat up next to the canopy?

Canopy & ATI fixtures don't mix, that said it should fit with minimum engineering.
You must have room for the vented air to escape on one side of the fixture that must be vented out of the canopy with fans, the rear & top of the canopy should be open really for ventilation.

ATI fixtures don't have much light spillover @ all without a canopy.

8 bulb for a 4 foot tank. but then again you don't want to have a killer fixture to have soft corals and shrooms.

I would ditch the canopy and leave the tank open better oxygen exchange i then would get the ATI 8 bulb fixture

Agree! I ditched my canopy when building my 90 as I picked up for a steal locally an Outer Orbit MH/T5 combo and went topless. Looks great and helps with heat too!

I have a 90 with a canopy and I run a tek 6 bulb with no heat issues, they must not put out the heat an ATI fixture does? With the lights on it never gets above 80.

Anyone here concerned that we are talking about using T5's and a tank that is 24" tall?

Interesting thread, Mike. Pretty long, too. After reading it, I still remain concerned about T5's and a 24" height. It all depends on what corals and where you want to keep them . I agree you can work with it, though. LOL!!

The deal on the ATI fixtures is at ReefGeek. Shoot them an email asking what they have available. 25-35% off brand new. I bought the 8 bulb sunpower for 30% off and it just has a small scratch on top. These are considered factory seconds. I believe David has posted some of these in the sponsor forums.
