Live rock, so much activity? Too much :3
Heyo everyone, im new to this forums so hey
So ive kept tanks for years, various fighting fish , tetras, plecos, guppies and cories off the top of my head and i recently look the plunge into getting a setup for a pair of clown fish. SO after dealing with the guys at the store for a while i came home with a tank, sand, filters, all the other producty things, a bunch of salt water, hydrometer and such. I got that all going let it settle for a few days, then i went back a few days ago to get my life rock. Just want to throw in how amazing this stuff is, that being said i think im having some issues. if its of importance this is what ive spotted so far, with general names not specifics. 6 Shrimp 9 crabs 4 flowers 13 snails 19 star fish ( woah they are amazing ) 973457467345986734509867459 worms The next day i went and got my plants and things. I added n over exaggeration to that worm count, its absolutely insane. Mind you this is all coming off 3.7kg of live rock!, i was meant to be going in on thursday which from this post is around 3 days exactly at this time to get my clown fish. Im taking in a water sample to make sure my water is ready and that, but looking at the tank the sheer mass of worms is actually worrying me. So here are my few questions after all that rambling on. 1.Is it normal to get that much life from the rock? 2.Why is there so many worms and is there anything i can do to get rid of them? 3.Will the vast majority of worms kill my other wild life? (starfish are the most im worried about) Thanks heaps again, and thankyou for letting me join your community Cheers. |

Do you intend to keep coral someday? If so, you should show us a picture of the starfish, they may be unwanted. It doesn't sound like you intended to set up a quarantine tank for those clown fish. Please read the stickies and reconsider.

If you have the asterina starfish that came on your liverock they are not reef safe. They will munch away on your zoas and palys if you ever decided to keep some. Getting rid of them is easy, just get a harlequin shrimp. Bristleworms are actually good for your tank since they will clean out the detritus. Fireworms are the only ones you should be worried about. If you want to control the population get either a sixline wrasse, or a melanurus wrasse.

Or an arrow crab! They are a delight to watch while eating bristle worms, and are reef safe too.

How big is your tank? What are your water parameters? You should make sure the tank has fully cycled before adding livestock. And, please quarantine any fish before adding to the main tank.

Seems a bit soon to be adding livestock to that tank.

I have a nano JBJ 28 and I notice here you guys are stressing quarantine. I have some coral in the tank, bought the whole set up about 3 weeks ago and tank had been running for a couple of years. Should I still quarantine? If so how best should I set up one? Only putting in a couple of clowns in a few weeks. Maybe a mated pair.
By the way my name is Rob I'm new here. |

PS I have 3 peppermint shrimp because the tank had some unwanted Aiptasia anemone's in it. Should I add and clean up crew?

I agree with most folks here. Definitely need to stop and slow down to read, research everything about saltwater aquaria keeping. Always QT all livestock, invets and corals... ALWAYS!! 8 weeks minimum to QT all livestock. That's not a joke...

Slow down & research.
Do NOT put in a harlequin shrimp unless you are prepared to buy starfish for them to eat once the asternias are gone. They only eat starfish, nothing else.

Okay so today i got home from school and everything seems dead and the water is cloudy as heck.
I did everything step by step and things were all fine, Sunday after getting the flower plant things in the tank everything went hay wire. The worms in the tank at the moment is just astonishing. |

I think you should take a long look at the links posted three posts above you. Seems like you might have went a little too fast, though I'm sure the pet store you got everything from said that would be OK. They tend to lie to make a sale, or are just ignorant which happens often as well.
You are far too vague about what you've put in the tank. You also haven't posted any test results. Do you have any test kits? Did the pet store test your water? Did they tell you what test kits they used and what the exact results were (not just "it's good")? How long has the tank been set up? Did you properly cycle it? What exactly have you put in the tank so far? What kind of filtration system are you using?

DOn't get arrow crabs. Bristleworms are useful, and if you don't have any, you need them. You don't need crabs larger than micro-hermits.
