ats skimmer combo
I have a few questions, I posted earlier about a sump design, I have a thirty gal tank and I'm wanting to make a ats as part of I'm inlet flow into the sump tank, I also wanna run a skimmer. And have a section for some live rock as all my Mt has is dry rock. Then have a section for my return pump and heater. I want to have a impressive 35 gal Mt down the road so I want to have great tank chemistry. Now is that overkill? I have all the time in the world to build this. From what I've read most people don't run both a ats and a skimmer at the same time because it takes away from algae growth.

Mt?
Running a skimmer at the same time in effect does take away from the algae growth, but is beneficial overall as it removes excess nutrients the ATS will get plenty from what ever the skimmer leaves behind. Basically it just means you will be cleaning the algae every 14 days with the skimmer on as opposed to every 7-9 days figuratively speaking.
