Pump Trouble

I've installed a Apex Lite and when I use the feed button to shut off the pump it doesn't want to turn back on. I can hear it buzzing but it won't pump. I'm assuming its loosing its prime. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?
Thanks

Did it ever lose it's prime when you lose power in a storm? Or when you shut it down to do a water change? Are you sure it's not that the pump is 'stuck'? Is it in the sump or is it external? Can we see a photo of how it's plumbed in?

Please don't use check valves. Unless you clean them REGULARLY they will fail!

Yes if I turn the pump off during water changes it does the same thing. The pump is a mag 12 and is in the sump. I work on the picture when i get back home. If left alone it will eventually start working again but sometimes it takes hours.
