Big Mistake-Razor Fell in Tank
So, I f'ed up! I was lowering the cable height on one side of the light and the cable on the other side slipped out of the hanger (should have tightened the loop). About a quarter of the fixture fell into the water. It still works but it has a mind of it's own now and switches between modes as if someone is turning the knob. I took it apart twice and put some compressed air followed by a blow dryer and nothing has changed. Everything is dry but there is some corrosion.
Any recommendations Last edited by r1racer; 04/03/2013 at 11:30 AM. |

I'm not sure if marinedepot will take it back. If they would I think that would be your best bet though.

A free exchange? After dropping something electronic in the water?
Customers today have some WILD expectations for customer service. Best of luck to you. Very unfortunate about the accident. Flat out sucks. |

The directions should clearly say to tighten down the loop hanger if you really want to get technical...

my MP40 controller dropped in water once.
I emailed Tim from Ecotech, asked him if I can buy just replacement board, to replace it myself, since I have a background in the field. he sent me a new controller, and asked me to send the old one back when I could ! no charge ! even shipping I didnt pay, as he did this through a reseller in Canada, and they were offering free shipping if I purchased over 100 bucks, which I do monthly renewing carbon and so on ! so just email them and see what can be done. maybe you get lucky like I did |

I would contact the company and if see if they would be willing to repair it or possibly replace it for a discount. I would not expect it though. I'm sure the directions do clearly state not to immerse it in water.

I would suggest trying to place in it a big bag of dry rice. Even though you blew it out with compressed air and a hair dryer, chance are there is still some moisture in the circuit somewhere. If you can take it apart and place the components in the rice, that wouild be best. Leave them in the rice for 24 hours.

Haha, that's like the rice trick for mobile phones... Had used that one when my phone fell into the bathtub...
I think the main problem is that the saltwater in conjunction with the electric current does a lot of damage to the circuit boards with their delicate connections... Good luck nonetheless! |

yes rice works for freshwater, but for salt, its much more conductive, shorting most circuits and burning components.
you can try to clean it up with a Q tip, but if some components are fried between then ... but do contact them. they can change a couple of resistors and get it going ... hopefully they will give you an offer on repair or replacement or ... in future, if electronics fall in saltwater, unplug it ASAP, then DRY it and do not plug back in till you are 100% sure its fully dry. |

Use a product called "detox it". It can be found at any electronics store like radio shack. All u have to do is spray it on and let it drip off your board and u are set. The corrosion won't be a problem after that.

I would follow Chris's advice. $100 + shipping isnt bad, considering.
