Brown "dust"

I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that a layer of what I can only describe as brown dust will coat my rocks from time to time. It blows off with a turkey baster so it's obviously not attached to the rock. I've never dealt with diatoms even when I was cycling, but I'm wondering if this is them.

I should have taken a picture, but I blew it all off right before I posted this. The tank is almost 2 years old. I haven't changed anything in over 6 months. Just did a 20% water change last week. No new fish to add to the bioload. Curious about what could have caused the issue.
