Help identifying coral and issue
Hi, need help Identifying some corals growing on established live rock I bought with my tank off CL. Im thinking its some sort of zoas. They are brown though and not sure if that is a result of water issue or just normal. My tank had a very quick cycle and other than a little diatom issue and hair algae (critters have under control) everything has been testing well. Thanks

The polyps are Protopalythoa sp. - you might want to read up on them and then decide if you want to keep them or not.
The last picture shows what might be a majano anemone, they can potentially become pests but don't grow extremely fast, so you can also decide when/if you want to act. |

+1 and add a little hair algae in there as well. Might want to address that as well.

Toxic, harmless to us unless we wound them, get them on our hands and then rub our eyes, or drink water in which a wounded paly has been houses. THis also holds for pets. If you're working with them, wear gloves and goggles and toss the water immediately. If you get poisoned, it's ER stuff.
OTOH, I had them for years, loved them, had none of these warning and never had a problem. Just use ordinary caution and wear exam gloves---you should, anyway, out of kindness to the critters you keep---and don't leave water that held a wounded one sitting about. Many creatures and some plants we deal with are toxic. Just toss waste immediately and wear gloves.

Thanks for the replies.
Ill read up on both. Probably, take care of the anemone soon though. The Protopalythoa are on a few of the rocks but I will probably let them be, going to go slow with new coral so Ill just keep them away from those for the time being as I have plenty of room. Sk8r, thanks for the tips, are either of these particularly toxic or was that just general info? Regardless, your advice is solid!

there is a good chance the paly will morph color a little and might look a little more appealing, give it a chance with proper light and nutrition and it might turn into something pretty.

The hair algae seems to be improving. I had a bit of an outbreak over a week ago. Critters seem to be helping and I did a couple of small WCs. Just got a phosphate test yesterday and the phosphate is about zero as best as I can tell. Anything else I should be doing?
Thanks again.
