Am I crazy?
Now this post isnt to put anyone down, I just simply want to know if its me being to careful or if this is truely a irresponsible decision. I spoke to someone with a 55 gallon reef which was stocked with a morish idol, sail fin, and a fox face! i was shocked when i heard this and his response was they are all little and, when they got bigger he would upgrade. Even as little fish they should have WAY more room even if they plan to upgrade? Am i crazy or is this truely irresponsible?

No, he shouldn't have those fish, even as juveniles.

Upgrades don't always happen -- life has a way of getting in the way.
I was suppose to have my "big" tank over 5 years ago, still don't have it.

Why concern your self. Maybe he upgrade or maybe not. Maybe he trade them in when they get bigger maybe not. Its certainly up to the individual.
You can only inform him of the size they will get and that they will out grow the aquarium. Yellow tang that can grow as big as a dinner plate (7-9 inches)who has an aquarium to justify owning one. Some will have stunted growth because of the size of the aquarium is that good or bad hmmm. The likelyhood of it heading back to the ocean where it came from is very very slight. So while he has them hopefully despite the under size aquarium the hobbyist take good care of them until he can't anymore. Then he return them to LFS and their sold to someone with giant aquarium for further enjoyment. Where do all those oversized tangs and other oversize marine fish go? hmmm. Very seldom do i see any at LFS. Where do they go???? |

i completely agree but, to me it seems to be happening more and more that people arent really considering the size of a grown fish. I know its always happened and always will, but i guess this place is just an outlet to rant and get it out there lol!

I was in a LFS over the past weekend and overheard a couple talking about their 55 gal stocked with a maroon clown, a niger trigger, a humu trigger and a sailfin tang (among others). They were talking to the LFS employee about adding another maroon clown. I so wanted to berate them for their poor choices, but bit my tongue and walked away.

Remember kind words turn away wrath.
Most hobbyist are quite willing to have a conversation about their system. In friendly conversation enlightment can and sometimes do come in. Scolding a hobbyist for his lack of proper procedures just may not work. |

Some people wont listen anyways. They will have to learn the hard way. Its unfortunate for the fish and other livestock!

Back in the day, alot of people had oscars in 55 gallons. Not just one either. No outrage about that if I remember. Just sayin.

I hate when people start being a Tang nazi. I have a blue tang and a yellow tang in my 40g as well as some other fishes.
Dogs and cats are also don't belong to your house. Just because they are domesticated it doesn't mean you should keep them in your house. Its not their right environment. Dogs should be in wild running and birds should be flying instead of being in a cage. What drives me mad is that most of these people who are so concerned about right environment for fishes have dogs and birds. I am pretty sure about that. If you don't let your dog run as much it wants whenever it wants keep them with leash, I can keep my tangs too... I am gonna be flamed and burned for saying these but if you think about it without prejudice you might understand me. Ps: I got my tangs baby and they are small now and when they get big I will sell them for sure. It will be ridiculous to keep otherwise. I am not a cruel person as you might think Last edited by warfanax; 04/18/2013 at 09:07 PM. |

That isn’t the same thing in the LEAST bit! I agree dogs should not be kept in a cage they should have a bad yard big enough and be able to take walks with there owner as well as get all the exercise they need! The same goes with fish! They need plenty of room even as babies, especially a hippo tang needs "its space" just like a dog the difference is if you keep a dog in your house you won’t stunt its growth like you will your fish. Weather you want to say it or not it is cruel to keep a fish that needs more room in a small tank! You can exercise a dog not a fish! Not only is it cruel its irresponsible! Like you said you can keep your tangs to but why would to say you have 2 pretty fish that don’t belong in a tank that size!

i think the reason most lfs stores dont have big fish is because most die either because most people dont know what they are doing and the tank crashes or they get bored with the hobby, and the other problem is to get the fish to grow you have to feed a lot that will mean high phosphates and nitrates unless you have top of the line filtration and do your maintenance.i feed my fish every day but just small amounts but i have never had a fish get so big i had to take them out of the tank
