Is it safe for my tangs to eat chaeto?
I do not have a sump and once put it in my tank but my hippo and yellow tangs kept eating it and someone told me once that it is bad for the tangs digestion system. Do you concur?

Not sure if it's bad for them, but it may not be terribly beneficial. I avoid it because it's so tough and stringy, it seems like something that could ball up in their gut and do damage. I prefer to feed my algae-eaters soft algaes; either sheets of nori, or leafy caulerpa or pieces of dulce.
If you want to grow chaeto to soak up nutrients, you could try using some sort of basket, something like one of those net-breeder containers for freshwater livebearers... just a thought

I have not really ever known Cheato to be the most palatable macro algae...My tangs really like Red Gracilaria, or Sea Lettuce.

wouldn't using it as food defeat the purpose of using it as an export medium?

Copraphagy, poop eating, is surprisingly common. Algae have cellulose and many other chemicals that vertebrates can not digest. Bacteria can break down cellulose. Eating feces gives the fish a chance to feed on the bacteria that are growing in the feces.
