turning skimmer off at night
Is it a bad idea? Does anybody do this? Just got an apex and playing around with its functions.

I wouldn't turn it off. Didn't you buy it to plug it in? The benefits of having it running 24/7 will far outweigh the noise, the PG & E bill, etc. Your tank will definitely thank you for it in the long run. GL.

Leave it running. I only turn mine off for major maintenance. If I am cleaning the cup I just turn off the FEED pump, but I have 2x recirculation pumps on mine that are always aerating the water and junk.
In practice I have three separate 120 plugins. One for feed pump and then the two recirculation pumps. Works wonderful too!

Another thing is your ORP will drop. If you do it at night your PH changes then too. That would be more stress on the system than I would want IMO

Ya see I have a 180 with a 40 sump. The amount of poo and other items deposited in the tank varies from tiime of day too.
Some of my corals I do not feed until I got to bed and it has been lights out on the tank for a while. So my bioload of just food varies and needs to be taken care of. I turn off my skim feed pump so that it gets a chance to get distributed all throughout the tank, then turn it back on about an hour after I feed. Everyone has a different situation so it is hard to use a blanket term.
