Intolerably loud air intake on NWB-150

I was getting fed up by the lackluster performance of my cpr bak-pak skimmer on my 20g so i decided to modify my sump a little and install the Reef Octopus NWB-150 i had sitting around from my 75g i took down. The air intake is SO LOUD!! Is this typical of these skimmers? The tank is in my bedroom so the quieter i can get it the better (was virtually silent before). I can use my reefkeeper to turn it off while im falling asleep, but would rather a proper fix.
Here's a video to show how loud it is:

Pull the "silencer" apart and put cotton balls in it.

Your silencer does not look right. One end should be offset and the other centered. The way yours is now, it is like not having a silerncer on at all.

Here is a pic of my old SRO 1000. You can see what i am talking about on the silencer.

Coralvue isn't known for their silencers .

Cotton balls will do the trick. If it doesn't I can help you build one that will work with stuff you have around the house.

You will need two plastic cups, cotton balls, and some tape.

yeah thats how it is now. Seems the same?

And thanks @ the cotton balls, it helps some but not where id like it to be. I only spent 5 min with it and have to go to work, im sure with some tweaking i can get it there

cool. We will work on it when you get home.

Just a bad design.

Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the exact same issue with a reef octopus skimmer (different model). My "silencer" has 2 intakes, both at the same height. Should they be off-set from each other?

I'll take a picture of my homemade silencer. Dead quite. Use a small Rubbermaid container, drill one hole in the bottom just big enough for the tube to squeeze through then drill two holes in the top and put a 2" long tube the same diameter as the main tube and close it up. I can only hear it when I open up the cabinet.

I put a rubber cap on one of the intakes at the top, which has helped with noise. It didn't come with my skimmer, but when I called CoralVue, they sent me the caps for free. I would be interested in seeing sminker's design, though.
