I think you would have spotlighting with only 3 bulbs even at 12''. Well, not necessarily spotlighting but you will not have even light. I think it would be ok though until you get more lights. What is your ultimate goal for the tank? If you want corals you will need more lights.

I run the royal blues for 10 hours and the bulbs for 8 as of now. So the blues come on for and hour, then the bulbs come one, bulbs off, and then the blues off an hour later. I don't have timers yet but will soon. I am trying to decide if I can afford an apex or if I should just get timers.
