Why do companies sell brine shrimp?

If it has no nutritional value? It's been great for me when a had bred angelfish and they grew. Just straight out of the package, no supplementation.

It's good stuff to get picky eaters to start feeding.

That's it? There is more to it than that because as I've said my fry grew.

Brine shrimp has plenty of nutritional value. I'm not sure where the myth comes from that it does not. I see it perpetuated here all the time.

It is an extremely healthy and lean source of protein, vitamin d, b-12, selenium, etc. in other words, brine shrimp is a perfectly fine meaty part of a fish's diet. It is most certainly not junk food.

Well, them having no nutritional value doesn't make them a horrible food. Actually, I think this is poor phrasing and was probably originally meant to say they don't offer the full nutrition the fish needs. It just makes them a bad staple food. As long as the diet is balanced out enough to fill in the gaps that the brine shrimp don't fill, they are perfectly fine as a food. Plus, it depends on the fish itself.

As I tell my fiance all the time, since she loves to give the fish live "junk food"... "You're feeding them potato chips. Just don't go nuts with it."

yap, for sure not a bad food, and we can keep some fish alive with just feeding brine. but for sure not thriving or spawning ...

but for other fish, specially angels, seahorses and ... , it wont be enough... the fish will loose weight and waste away.

the potato chips analogy is good, or pop corn ... sure for a night or even a week we can live on pop corn ... but we wont be in spawning moode if just on pop corn for a week lol [ok most of us]

I think the main thing brine are missing is the fatty acids, which is why they sell the enriched version.

I dont like to eat the same thing for every meal, every day. So I dont feed my fish the same thing all the time. I feed a wide variety of foods. Frozen, fresh, freeze dried, gel even pellets. I feed mysis as well as brine. I use frozen and freeze dried brine and mysis suspended in liquid. I also feed my puffer krill. Its not the bulk of his diet but its part of it. So everything in moderation. As long as you feed a variety and make sure that each of your fish has their dietary needs met I dont think it will hurt anything to feed brine. IMO.
