Identify hitchhikers
Hello everyone,
I've just just started my first reef tank, exciting stuff. But now ofcourse I'm curious about the life popping up. I bought some used live rock and have so far seen these things. Anyone care to help me figure out what they are, good or bad? The pictures aren't that great, phone camera and shaky hand But hopefully you can see something. I suppose the first one is something I don't want there, doesn't look so pretty. But if thats true, how do I get rid of it. The second image I've seen 6 of the same in a variety of sizes. It pulles itself inside the rock when frightened. And the third image is just the one, its prety smal. Thanks you, Kyle |

#1, I'm not sure but it looks like a type of sponge. It could also be a blue coral. I would give it some time, most likely it is something good.
#2 is a sea fan, a good filter feeder. #3 is a dreaded apitasia, it needs to be removed/killed ASAP. |

Agree with above.
Easiest way to remove the apistsia to me is a syringe and needle full of lemon juice injected into the mouth |

If you can, pull out the rock and take a cigar lighter to the thing. Treating it in tank gives it the opportunity to release planulae and spawn more of the vermin.
