About a week ago I was setting up my lights on my tank and a plugged in extension cord fell into my water. Before the water was shocked my nitrates and nitrites were low and nearly gone. But now they are both off the charts. I have no fish because I am currently cycling my tank. All I have are rocks and sand. I think that these are the correct pictures to show what happened to my sand. Does anyone know what the brown stuff is on top of it? Also are there any remedies for this type of situation?

wow so did it shock the water and kill off a ton of bacteria and stuff then? how did you get it out of the water? I have always been a little sketched out with the careless way I see alot of tanks set up wit lighting/electricity. I went to a local fish store today and they had two digital ballasts caked in salt under the tank, obviously water was getting splashed on them, not safe!

Well, thank goodness no fish were in there. It might have killed off some bacteria, but it may also just be that the tank is actually cycling. Brown as in reddish brown or babypoo brown? Reddish is cyano, babypoo is diatoms. No remedy but sit and wait. Feed it a micro-pinch of fishfood daily til you see ammonia, then for several days after the ammonia is all gone, which proves your tank has cycled.

napydred...
My wife decided she wanted to help me set up the lights... I obiviously allowed her to help, in the process it fell in. I did kill off alot of the bacteria, luckily the tank is recovering very quickly, quiet surprised!

I have read your sticky with the ammonia tip! I have been doing that since week 1. Great tip! BTW its babypoo brown (i.e. diatoms), there are some yellow, and pink coloration on the silicon in the refugium. But I am not concerned about it.
