Refugium question.

Is there such thing as too much flow in a fuge? I have my return tee'd off to the fuge with a ball valve turned about an 8th of the way open (maybe a little more) and my 2 Jebao WP-25s came in today to replace my one Aqueon 1250 that I had used to hold me off till these came out and now I put my 1250 in the fuge and got pretty aggressive tumble to my Chaeto... Not too bad but it sure is tumbling! and was wondering if that would be too much? If so is there any way to throttle the 1250 down so I don't have to go out and buy a new powerhead? If need be I can take a video and post it up to show you guys how its flowing.. Thx again.

-Anthony

Hi Anthony! welcome to reef central!

So you have an aqueon 1250 (1250gph) running in your fuge-right?

Do you only have chaeto, or do you also have a substrate (sand, rock, mud) in the fuge section?

Tumbling the chaeto gently will yield better results IMO. If its blasting and bouncing, you will get some breakage and some of the chaeto will end up in return intake and the display. Not a bad thing if you've got tangs but you dont want that collecting around pump intakes or drains because it may cause problems. Pods will like to hang out in chaeto also, so an aggressive tumble would keep them from finding refuge.

Yeah I have the 1250gph powerhead in there bare bottom with a few pieces of live rock... I didn't see any pods in there before putting the pump in, even though I was told it was seeded with "tons of pods".. So your saying if I was to put pods in there, they wouldn't last long? Cause I would love to have a mandarin in my DT eventually, living of of pods. A few pieces have broken off and ended up in my DT which my yellow tang had a nice little dinner off of.
So would I need to put a smaller powerhead in there to create a slower tumble or could I throttle it with say a fan dimmer switch? I really want Pods to be able to live in it. But also want it to tumble a little to help it grow very well..

On the right track!

A dimmer may or may not work. It's worth a try though since they are pretty cheap. The koralia nanos and cobalt aquatics are good alternatives if you decide to switch. Don't worry about pods. As long as things are stable and you're not blasting the fuge they will populate.
