Fish that add to the ecosystem...

I was given a piece of advice that I am trying to figure out how to exactly use to my advantage with my 65g reef tank. The guy told me (as I was buying my tank from him) that the secret is to make sure everything I put into the tank contributes to the overall ecosystem (including fish).

My question is what fish would contribute to the overall health of the tank?

In general:
-Some fish eat algae which is good. (Some Blennies and Tangs)
-Some fish eat parasites which is good. (Some Wrasses and Gobies)
-Some fish eat pests which is good. (Some wrasses)

But be careful because some of this fix are mean a$$holes that will beat up other fish.

It's a give and take thing.

Just be careful with watchman gobies as they will sift through the sand so much that you may end up having your rock work shift if its not sitting directly on bottom glass. Also watch out for those sandstorms from them when they spit the sand out.

Yet they often times tend to starve to death

Most sand sifting stuff will end up starving since most tanks won't have the food to sustain them. Like goat fish and gobies.
