Thanks for the suggestion but it seems silly to have to use a specific manufatures test kit to test a common water parameter. If that's their feedback, then I'm not sure that's the brand of salt I want to continue to use.

yeah, they are pretty unique in the borate area, not worse or better, but different. Its a very similar situation with the their buffer additive.

I just realized that I should have just included the whole thread:

Just kicked off a new experiment. The brute can I use for the salt side of my mixing station has some build up on the interior. I'm wondering if that could be "absorbing" some of the KH level??? As a test, I'm mixing up 2-2.5 gallons in a new clean bucket. It's circulating now with a power head. I'll test it in a couple of hours and again tomorrow morning. I'll post the results.

i use the big brut or at least i have for years. always got residue from the salt but the pail never had any affect on the alk or any other. most are concerned what will leach from the pail

I agree, the pail probably won't affect alk. What you could do is buy a small thing of Reef Crystals and if your test kits register about 12 dKH at 35ppt or 1.026, then the kits are fine.

Good idea. I'm heading in to one of my LFS tomorrow. I'll review the situation with them as well. I know they like Red Sea salt.

Thanks everyone!

Just a quick update on my latest experiment. I mixed up 2-2.5g in a fresh clean bucket with powerhead dropped in. After a couple of hours, KH was 9. This morning, KH was...9!
Ok, so why would mixing to the same salinity using the same salt result in a 3 dKH lower reading when mixed in my brute can vs. a clean bucket? Could the deposits/residue in the brute be somehow absorbing alk? Looks like I need to borrow a pressure washer and run another test.

That is closer in line with what Seachem is saying it should with the type of tests you are using. Though according to them, your true total alkalinity is more like the equivalent of 11 or so. Its a very confusing mess.
