One of my LFS did that with a tang, thing is it looks sick and they have it in a DT in isolation. I've been worried about buying anything since I saw him there because I worry that stuffs in the water. They are big on biological filtration. They have to have over 500lbs of LR and they have a 120g fuge also..i'm not convinced. Chemicals are dirt cheap there so I do buy those.

I went to check up on the fish today. At first I couldn't find them, I thought they were dead or someone took him. I then spotted them behind a fake coral. One of them came out quick and was trying to eat fish poo thru the divider. The other one played dead under the rock for a while.

The second one then emerged and was swimming and looked semi normal.

The second one was doing this little dance which might be ick.

I asked the store employee what was the deal with them. He told me that they were drop offs. The black clown you see in the video came in with them.

Once I learned that the guy was an idiot, I bought Frank a 12g Fluval Edge. He now has a big planted tank to live in and swims all day long. Well, except when he swims in the plants to take a nap.

To be fair, he's not an idiot. He's telling you a fact about bettas in the wild. I used to catch these little aggressive bettas in the muddy paddy field when I was 8. They're not active swimmers unless they're in a fight. You can even keep one betta living healthily in a small jam jar successfully. I used to breed bettas in a 2 gallon ceramic pot, no air pump, no water pump, just some plants.

I'm not going to argue with you in this thread because I don't want to derail the original topic, but everything I have read (Example) contradicts what the LFS told me. Including and most notably that they live in puddles.

Oh, and Frank swims all day long.

+1 on the betta they are found in small little puddles, go over seas and witness yourself. But you may be the time that believes it because its on the internet.

But back to the orginal topic........

Those 2 seem to active and good, I never understood why fish try to eat poo. maybe I will never understand unless I look at it through there eyes.

my urchin poops tiny white specks that look just like the roe i feed my fish. every time he poops, the clowns make a mad dash for supper. do fish have a sense of smell?

in one of those videos, did i see a butterfly fish? was that also a drop off from the same person?

i dunno...if those 2 have made it this long, maybe there's hope. it would be awesome to rescue them and nurse them back to health. you have to wonder what was going through the original owner's mind. surely, he/she could see these fish were getting sicker and sicker and instead of helping them, just dumped them off.

reminds me of the jerks that let a dog half starve to death before they finally surrender it.

Yep, that's me. I believe everything I read on the Internet.

Miami University's Biology Department seems to disagree with you about their habitat.

"Betta splendens (Family Belontiidae) commonly known as the "Siamese Fighting Fish" is native to tropical Southeast Asia including the northern Malay Peninsula, central and eastern Thailand, Kampuchea, and southern Vietnam
(Witte and Schmidt 1992). They live and breed in rice paddies, shallow ponds, and slow moving streams, and are known for their ability to survive in rather fetid, oxygen poor water by gulping air from the surface, when necessary."

Mahidol University in Bangkock Thailand also disagrees with you. They outline each of the 10 wild Betta species habitats in this paper, none of which are found in mud puddles.

Oh, but then again, Miami University and Mahidol University posted their papers on the Internet, so it's probably not true.

What kind of store would put those fish on display for sale. Baffles the mind.

You do realize that rice paddies are, in many cases, the equivalent of mud puddles, right?

Looks like lateral line erosion, they need to feed the fish a better diet. It could also be water quality, copper can do this apparently.

I think that's what the guy at the fish store meant to say. I grew up running around these paddy fields all day, so I saw these betta fish in their natural habitat. You can keep them in drinking cups too, no kidding. If you want a betta become more aggressive than he normally is, put him in the dark for a couple days before a fight.

Once there is tissue loss to the muscle, sepsis is likely and leads to death.

I would love to see a picture of a rice paddy that looks just like a mud puddle. Perhaps your definition of a puddle is different than mine because I'm just not seeing the correlation.

Why are you arguing about betta habitats? It has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.
