clogged media reactors
Hi everyone
Does anyone have suggestions on how to keep phosban media reactors by two little fishies clean. It seems that when I use the foam disks for gfo it clogs up on the bottom foam disc and slows the water flow. It was doing the same on my reactor with carbon until I replaced the foam disc with the plastic npx screen instead. |

Clogs with what? I dose a carbon source (vinegar) and my sponges will accumulate a light brown slim that does slow the flow. The nature of the clog should give you a direction to its source.

Yes its a brownish slim that almost totally covers the foam disc and also pushes the disc upward on reactor

GFO will cause some calcium precipitation until the water effluent is diluted. I switched to a phosphate absorbing resin instead of GFO and get a lot less precipitation.

I'm pretty sure you need to turn down your pump pressure. The gfo may be powdering from too much flow and the residue is clogging the foam and ports. That was my problem and I took the foam pads out. The gfo powder proceeded to coat my entire tank/sump/pumps etc...

Thanks for the advice . I will switch from gfo to another phosphate removing media. I believe that will help for the sole reason that I get away from the foam disc
