hydor slim skim

is it any good for a 15 or 20 gallon tank with just three small fish?

I'm of the opinion that any skimming is better than none, but you could probably control nutrients on a tank that size with just water changes alone.

If you plan on keeping softies and lps, then I would tune the skimmer down, it is possible to overskim an aquarium

I used to own one. It is a really quiet and low profile skimmer. I liked it. For your tank it would be perfect.
