new here from ohio
Hello all, A little about myself im new to the saltwater hobby I have a successful freshwater tank set up for like a year now with growing rainbow fish and cories. My saltwater knowledge comes from reading all the time and I have a 2 month old 8 gallon bio cube with about 8 lbs live rock and a two damsels also a clean up crew I plan on putting a couple frags in this weekend. A friend is giving me a couple that are easy for beginners. The main reason for joining is I have wanted to do a large tank. So about a month ago I bought a used 55gal with stand and filters and was just going to settle doing another fresh setup. Until today I find an ad for a 75 gal corner drilled tank for 60 dollars so I couldn't pass up the deal. so now im here to find out more info and figure out what I need to get I like to have everything before I start so any help would be appreciated. sorry for the long intro. Also where should I post my setup questions and stock questions. thanks in advance

WELCOME!!!
First off, you are in the right place for posting questions about your setup along the way! For stocking (fish) purposes, use this forum thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2068112 There is also a good thread about setting up a new tank http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2075632 Now to the meat and potatoes.... GREAT purchase for a 75gal AND drilled! Now you get to add volume with a sump. I would recommend building a tank stand that will hold your 75gal with room for your 55gal below as a sump. That would give you roughly 120ish gallons of total volume! You can find out how to DIY building a sump in the following thread (also post questions) http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=3 What do you need: (What I would consider bare minimums, based off of my personal progression through tank setups) Let's start from the top of the aquarium and work down. -Lighting: (LED, T5-HO, Metal Halide) I bought a T5HO fixture w/LED moonlights from AquaticLife. I wanted one powercord and a built-in timer so I didn't have to rely on a plug in the wall timer. -The tank: Did the tank come with the plumbing/bulkheads? If not, you will have to get bulkheads and build your overflow plumbing. This is a whole new can of worms to explain, so I will save my breath. If your tank has plumbing, you will want to inspect the bulkheads seals and the plumbing. It may benefit you to vinegar bath the plumbing and unscrew the bulkheads to check the seal. (Maybe even replace the seal to be sure its good). Give the drilled hole a good cleaning and reattach the bulkheads. -Pumps/Powerheads: (EcoTech MP40wES, Koralia, Tunze.....) Generally 10-20x the DT water volume. (Example. 75gal X 10 to 20= 750-1500GPH) Find powerheads in this range and if the are controlable, GREAT. (http://reefsources.itgo.com/guide/pumps.html) Also adding EDUCTORS to your return lines in the DT can increase flow. -Sump: It would be a great idea to use your 55gal as a sump. How to do that can be found in the DIY forum or by youtube/internet searches. -Skimmer: I'm only familiar with Reef Octopus, so look around and choose what you like best. You definitely will want an in-sump skimmer, and I've always loved the gate valve type of adjustment. Just remember to STEP UP ONE. If your total tank volume will be 110-120gal, then get a skimmer rated for 150gal. -Return pump: Check the calculators on the Reef Central home page. This is a debateable topic, but I'm guessing something in the 900-1000 GPH range will work for your tank. (That may even be overkill enough so that you can add reactors down the road, but I don't consider those a minimum requirement). -Plumbing: You will need pipes and valves to run plumbing for your sump. Soft or hard plumbing based on your needs (if you move or plan on moving, soft plumbing may be more convenient). KEEP IN MIND: If something were to happen to ANY portion of your plumbing, you should be able to isolate the issue. In other words USE VALVES! Anywhere you think you may have to take apart someday and cause the least amount of water on your floor, you should add a Valve! Thats my opinion, I'm sure others here will provide you with their thoughts. Good Luck, and ASK A LOT of questions and research multiple forums and threads. Everything you ever wanted to know, someone has already done. WELCOME AND HAPPY REEFING!

You mention your biocube is going to have some coral... Are you wanting the 75 to be a reef? If so, what kind of corals do you want to keep? What kind of budget are you working with?

Where in ohio? The CORA frag swap is about a month away at the Aladdin shrine near Easton mall. See you there?
