Funny Conversation turned awkward ;p

I met a fellow reefer out and about a few weeks ago, and we all know we ALL have our own ways of doing things. everything from vodka to reefmud. I could go on, but think you get my point. Well, I use picking lime in my tank and the tank seems to love it. An old time reefer and I'm old enough, 43 years old, he ws going on about how these 'KIDS" today and their gadgets and computers, I'm sure he was exaggerating some. How ever when i saw the amount of pickling lime he had stored and how he used it I was amazed;. I guess it would have helped if I knew what was in pickling lime and it seems to be everything a reef tank needs...Have any of you ever heard of such? This was a first for me and its super cheap

Are you asking if anyone has heard of using pickling lime? If so, absolutely. Ms.Wages works great. It's the same thing as kalk basically. Old school reefers setup gravity fed drip systems with great results for low to medium demand tanks.

Pickling lime in ato water will keep your water parameters stable, eliminating the need for dosing. I believe it has been proven for reef tanks up to 100g or so. I use it in a 40 and a 60. It also raises alk.

Pickling lime is exactly the same as Calcium Hydroxide, and since it's food-grade, it's at least reasonably pure. A note - dosing kalkwasser won't eliminate the need for some additional source of calcium/alkalinity in most reasonably stocked hard coral tanks (LPS or SPS). But it does help reduce the amount of CaCl2 and NaHCO3 that must be added, thereby mitigating the "ion shift" problem of 2-part dosing.

There is also at least the possibility that dosing kalk will abiotically precipitate calcium phosphate because of the locally high pH where the kalk is dripped in.
