What is it? Hitchhiker help
I am setting up my first marine aquarium and am about 2 weeks into the cycle. I have some live rock from a craigslist score. There is lots of stuff on the rocks I'm trying to figure out. green and purple mushrooms. little pinkish tube worms. aptaisia {sigh}. lots of little brittle star things. bristle worms. tiny feather dusters, pods, etc.
One thing I haven't identified looks like a 1/2 inch long clearish white worm 1/16 in diameter attached on one end to the rock. There isn't a tube or noticeable attachment body. When feeding they stretch out or uncoil into a very thin hair like thing about 1 1/2 inches long. They don't seem to move from where they are attached, but there are more each day. They are too small / thin for a good picture. Any idea what they are? |

Google Digitate Hydroid. I have tons of them in my tank. I don't think they hurt anything in my tank, but I've read here of others who have seen them damage Zoas and other coral.

Digitate Hydroid FTW!
This thread has a perfect picture http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/11294...tate-hydroids/ There seems to be dispute if they are good / bad / go away on their own. I would like to keep zoas (still cycling though). should I leave them or try to get rid of them? |

Well, I have Zoas and other corals and haven't had any problems with the hydroids damaging them. I've actually seen them next to the Zoas, so I wouldn't worry about them. Some say they've killed them with hot water, vinegar and tweezers, but I just don't worry about them.
