protein skimmer

This is the first time that I am using the skimmer. I have just started to fill up my tank. I believe that it is a venturi protein skimmer. My question when I turn it on it sucks are into the tube but not enough to make the bubbles go over the overflow cup. Since I am new I am not sure if I have to hook up a powerhead to feed the skimmer or maybe I need to increase the water level that it is sitting in currently. Right now it is in about 6 inches. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure what brand you are using. I just bought a reef octo and it took 24hrs to break in.
Is there a slow adjustment for that thing? to increase the skim? its useless for now if you do, because of the break in period.

1. Nothing will really happen until you have organics in the tank.

2. Break in period is 2 weeks.

3. It's not supposed to overflow the cup--the bubbles make it partway up the tube and then slowly some organics make it to the cup. You can adjust it to make the skimmate wetter or drier. Adjustments are done by 1) water level in sump 2) back pressure as determined by gate valve adjustments.
