Fluval Spec 5 advice
I just bought a Fluval spec 5 09/02/13. I currently have 7.2lbs live rock, 5lbs live sand I upgraded the stock return pump with a mini jet 606, and have sealed the bottom slit on the over flow area. The tank is empty and still cycling, still early in the cycle. My ammonia is high, and nitrates have been steadily raising over the last 2 days. I am trying to finalize my tank ideas before it is cycled and I start adding livestock, as for lighting I am going to upgrade to a Boostled par 30. I plan on getting some red leg hermit crabs, maybe a few sexy shrimp, a clownfish, and possibly a small Goby. I also would like to add some coral in the future. I am thinking of adding a CPR AquaFuge2 Hang-On Refugium - Small, and using my fluval spec 5 stock light for lighting for now. I know there are a lot of great experienced people on these forums, Does all I mentioned sound good, anything I am missing, or any suggestions? I am new to the hobby been doing as much research as possible, so any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated.
I forgot to mention I am planning on removing the stock carbon bag from the filter sponge, and adding a nylon bag with Purigen in it. |

What does sealing the bottom slit on the over flow box do?
