In-Tank Refugium

So I am thinking of upgrading to a larger sump with a built in refugium. Meanwhile, I decided to buy an in-tank refugium to get some chaeto growing.

I took some of my sand and out it in and put some chaeto in as well. Anyone have opinions on these little refugiums?

If you're looking for a place to grow chaeto I don't think its going to help much. If you're looking for a safe place for pods its cool but you can achieve the same thing with a breeder box for alot cheaper.

Why wouldnt it help with growing Chaeto?

and as far as an aquafuge... those are too expensive for this short term... i will be upgrading sumps within the month so i wanted a short term thing.

Well assuming you have normal reef lighting its not going to do much to grow the chaeto. It may maintain what you put in there but that's about it. Who knows maybe you're planning on a clip light to put over it. Either way I would still put a ball in there for the pods to hang out in.

I have a ball of chaeto in there... i also put some sand in there (about an inch). I am running radions and they spread to the chaeto... they are running at 55%. does chaeto need a lot more light?

Chaeto grows best under 5,600K or 6,000K bulbs with more red light than the display tank.

Not really IMO. I have one of these ( http://zoomed.com/db/products/EntryD...D=2&SearchID=5 ) over my refugium and prune it every few 2-3 weeks.

does chaeto like lots of flow? i have a pump that came with my mini refuge and it blasts in there. seems like overkill lol

Id scratch that pump and place the box across from a powerhead shooting across the surface. That way it will get flow from above and into the box. I used to keep a breeder box in a 29 gal as an intank refuge and that seemed to work well.
