T5 to supplement my razor.
Hey fellas, i have a 27" 160w 16k razor over my 48x24x14" for over 5 months and im very happy with it, great light giving me great colors. However, even after hanging 17" above water level, im not getting good light at the both ends of the tank. i wanna keep some SPS over there to so im thinking of adding 2 tubes of T5 to supplement the razor as well as covering the whole 4 ft by using a 4ft fixture.
My questions are : 1) i will definitely lower my whites on my razor (my current settings are : A:80%B:100%, and lower my blues by a little. what ATI bulbs would be the best? im trying to gain more blue and red on my sps if possible. i have great green yellow and purples. im thinking either 1 blue+ and 1 Coral+ OR 1 blue+ and 1 Purple+. any advice? 2) ok i will be using a Aquazonic 4x54W t5 light set. doubt this brand is found in USA (im not from the states) but its basically a "cheapo" t5 set that uses cheap ballast and a single big reflector for all 4 tubes. i know you guys would advice me to use ATI fixtures but im really tight on budget and i found a good deal on this fixture. i would only be using 2 tubes over 4 tubes reflector anyway. my question is, with this kind of cheap ballast, how long would the bulbs last before i need to change them? thanks! |

Not an expert here but doing the same thing. So I'm interested in seeing other opinions. I just purchased two (4 bulbs total) Sunlight Supply retro fixture and going to be running Blue plus and Purple plus as a supplement to LEDs.

Just curious why actinic's? I thought those bulbs were for looks only providing no usefully light? With a full spectrum LED fixture do we need actinic's?

2 bulbs will not be enough to provide light needed on the ends. You will want all 4 for sure.
2 blue plus and 2 coral plus will provide a nice bump. The life of the bulbs will be determined more by cooling than the ballast. If they aren't properly cooled they will need to be replaced about every 6 months. Therefore a cheap unit will cost you a lot more than an ATI unit in just bulb replacements in less than 18 months. Going cheap always has its downfall.
