Remove separator in aquarium cabinet

I am wondering if it would be safe to make a hole in the separator of the cabinet below my aquarium.

I have the Fluval 29g Wide, with the cabinet sold with it, shown here:

The cabinet has a separator in the middle.

I would like to install a sump in the cabinet, but it is too large for one of the cabinet halves. I would like to make a hole in the separator in the middle, and maybe have a 2x4 that I could remove to put the sump, then put back. I wouldn't have the 2x4 fixed, it could be removed when I need to remove the sump. The 2x4 would hold the front part of the cabinet and the separator would still be there to hold the back side.

I am wondering if this would fragelize the cabinet too much for the weight of the aquarium.

I hope this is clear..

EDIT: it would be similar to this image, except the front part would be a removable 2*4 for ease of access:
