Need help with new aquamaxx hob skimmer

I just set up my aquamaxx hob skimmer last night....set the cup at its highest and it was producing a nice thick foam...then all of a sudden it was like the water level in the skimmer body itself lowered and the bubbles are not even making it up to the cup... I added water to the skimmer body thinking i needed to do that but it didnt matter....then I lowered the cup about 1/2 inch and water started OVERFLOWING into the cup....this Marineland 34 gallon tank has only been up a week, an upgrade from my 16 gallon nano...should I just keep the cup higher and let it break in?? Also what size tubing fits the drain ?? Thanks!

I own this skimmer. Let the skimmer break in. The foam head will rise and the skimmer will produce after a while. The higher the cup the dryer the skimmate.

I just turned the return pipe outlet towards the back instead of out into the tank. .. Still making bubbles but they are not going out into the tank. .dont know if there is any reason NOT to do it that way but it is solving my bubble problem...

I cut a piece of foam and attached it to the outlet. This skimmer is very good!
