refugium for breeding pods?

i was thinking of setting up a 5 gallon refugium for my 30 gallon tank. I have a strong skimmer and dose vodka so im not sure any macro alga could grow, but im just looking to create pods for a food source for my fish.

does anyone have success with vodka dosing and macro algae. Also if cheato wont work is there a next best way for increasing my pod population?

And laast question is, i want the refugium above the tank. but not sure how to go about in preventing micro bubbles.
